Neil Island, renamed Shaheed Dweep in 2018, is a small island about 40 km from Port Blair and an hour's ferry ride from Havelock. It is only a few kilometres across, with farming villages that grow vegetables for the Andamans, and beaches on every side. Life here is slow, and that is its charm.
The things to do on Neil include the natural rock bridge at low tide, snorkelling over coral at Bharatpur beach, sunset at Laxmanpur, sunrise at Sitapur, diving with small dive schools, and cycling between beaches and villages.
One to two nights is ideal. October to May is the best season.

Beaches
See the natural bridge

The natural bridge, a rock arch on the shore near Laxmanpur beach No. 2, is Neil's best-known sight. It is reached by walking over rocks and coral at low tide, when rock pools reveal sea cucumbers, starfish and small fish. Check tide times, wear sturdy footwear and do not step on live coral.
Local guides at the site can point out marine life in the pools and suggest the safest path. Early morning low tides are cooler and less crowded than afternoon ones.

Snorkel at Bharatpur beach
Bharatpur beach, near the jetty, has calm, shallow water with coral close to shore. Snorkelling, glass-bottom boat rides and other water sports are offered.

Diving and exploring

- Good for
- Beginners and divers
Cycle around the island
The island is small and flat enough to explore by bicycle or scooter. Roads run through paddy fields, banana groves and villages between the beaches.
The main loop is only about 15 km, with gentle slopes, so it is easy to cycle from Sitapur in the east to Laxmanpur in the west and stop at beaches along the way.
- Good for
- Couples, active travellers
Walk through the villages
Neil's villages are named after figures from the Ramayana, including Sitapur, Laxmanpur, Bharatpur and Ramnagar. Many residents are settlers from Bengal. The small market near the jetty sells fruit and vegetables grown on the island.
Explore rock pools
At low tide, the coral flats on several beaches turn into rock pools full of life. Go with a local guide to learn what you are seeing, and avoid touching the animals.
Eat seafood
Small restaurants serve grilled fish, prawn curry and Bengali dishes. Fresh coconut water is everywhere.
- Good for
- Food lovers
Take a boat to the reefs
Small boats from the jetty take visitors to reefs off the island for snorkelling in deeper, clearer water than at the beaches. Trips usually last one to two hours.
- Good for
- Swimmers
Visit the local market
The small market near the jetty is where islanders sell vegetables, fruit and fish. It is a good place to buy fresh coconuts and bananas and see everyday island life.
