Water sports in India range from quick beach rides, such as parasailing, jet skis and banana boats, to activities that take more time and skill, such as scuba diving, surfing and kayaking. The beach rides are concentrated in Goa, the Andamans, the Konkan coast of Maharashtra and a few lakes; the more serious sports each have their own best places.
Most coastal water sports stop during the south-west monsoon, from about June to September, when the sea is rough and state governments suspend operations. This guide covers where to try each activity, the season and how to choose a safe operator.
Quick answer
The best places for water sports in India are Goa (parasailing, jet skis, banana rides, kayaking), the Andaman Islands (sea walks, snorkelling, scuba, glass-bottom boats), Tarkarli and Malvan in Maharashtra, Murudeshwar and Netrani in Karnataka, Tehri Lake in Uttarakhand and Umiam Lake in Meghalaya. The season on the coast is roughly October to May; most beach water sports are suspended in the monsoon.

How a sea walk works
A sea walk suits people who cannot swim but want to see a reef up close. After a briefing on a boat or platform, you climb down a ladder wearing a heavy helmet that is fed air from the surface. You walk on the sandy seabed a few metres down, with a trained diver holding your hand, for about 15 to 20 minutes.
You do not need to equalise your ears as much as in scuba diving, but tell the staff if you have ear, sinus, heart or breathing problems. Photos and videos are usually sold afterwards.
Choosing a safe operator
- Use operators licensed by the state tourism department or port authority; in Goa, ask to see the licence.
- Check that life jackets fit and are buckled, and that staff wear them too.
- For parasailing, look at the harness, ropes and the boat; do not fly in strong wind or rain.
- For jet skis, ride with an instructor unless you are experienced, and keep away from swimmers.
- Agree the price and duration before you start, and avoid touts on the beach.
- Do not do water sports after drinking alcohol.
When to go
On the west coast, in the Andamans and in Lakshadweep, the season runs from about October to May. Operations are suspended from about June to September, when the south-west monsoon makes the sea dangerous. Lakes such as Tehri and Umiam run for more of the year but close in storms and heavy rain.
Safety
- Wear a life jacket for every activity, whatever your swimming ability.
- Tell the operator about any heart, back or neck problems, and about pregnancy.
- Avoid water sports in rough seas, strong wind or monsoon conditions.
- Watch children closely on beaches, where rip currents can be strong.
- Use waterproof sunscreen and drink plenty of water.
What to pack
- Swimwear and a rash guard
- Waterproof sunscreen
- A waterproof phone pouch
- Flip-flops
- A towel and a change of clothes
