India's adventure calendar is shaped by two things: winter snow in the Himalaya and the south-west monsoon, which reaches most of the country in June and retreats by September or October. The same month can be perfect in one region and closed in another. July is peak season in Ladakh and the Sahyadris, for example, and the off season for Rishikesh rafting, Himachal paragliding and Andaman diving.
Use the month-by-month calendar to find what is at its best when you can travel, and the activity table to find when to go for a particular adventure.
Quick answer
The best time for adventure travel in India depends on the activity: snow treks and skiing from December to March, most Himalayan treks, rafting and paragliding from March to June and September to November, Ladakh and Spiti from June to September, monsoon treks in the Sahyadris from June to September, and diving, surfing and desert trips from October to May. Many river and air activities pause in July and August.
Key takeaways
- October and November are the best all-round months: rafting, paragliding, treks, diving and deserts are all in season.
- December to March is for snow treks, skiing, the desert and the coast.
- June to September is the season for Ladakh, Spiti, Kashmir treks, the Valley of Flowers and Sahyadri monsoon treks.
- Rishikesh rafting and Himachal paragliding pause in the peak monsoon.
- Coastal water sports, diving and surfing on the west coast stop in the south-west monsoon.

What the monsoon closes
From about June to September, several activities are paused by law or by operators for safety. Commercial rafting at Rishikesh is suspended by the Uttarakhand government, usually in July and August. Paragliding at Bir Billing is banned from 15 July to 15 September. Beach water sports in Goa stop, and most diving and snorkelling on the west coast and in the islands is suspended.
At the same time, the monsoon opens its own adventures: rain-shadow Ladakh, Spiti and Kashmir, the Valley of Flowers, Coorg and Kolad rafting, and green Sahyadri treks.
Holidays and crowds
- Long weekends, Diwali, Christmas to New Year and summer school holidays (May to June) are the busiest times; book early.
- Shoulder months such as early March, late September and early December are quieter and often cheaper.
- Weekdays at Rishikesh, Lonavala and Solang are far calmer than weekends.
Safety
- Check official closures and weather alerts before travel; they change year to year.
- Avoid Himalayan roads during heavy monsoon rain.
- Snowfall can close passes suddenly, even in spring and autumn.
- In summer, avoid the plains and deserts in the middle of the day.
