Ranchi, at about 650 metres on the Chota Nagpur plateau, is the capital of Jharkhand. Its mild climate made it the summer capital of Bihar under British rule. The region is home to Munda, Oraon, Santhal and other Adivasi communities, and Ranchi is closely linked to the tribal leader Birsa Munda, who led an uprising against colonial rule in the 1890s.
The things to do in Ranchi centre on its waterfalls, where rivers tumble off the plateau: Hundru, Dassam, Jonha and others. In the city are hilltop temples and viewpoints, lakes and gardens, and museums on tribal history. The winding roads of Patratu Valley, the Sun Temple at Bundu, and further afield Netarhat and Betla National Park make good excursions.
Two to three days is ideal. The waterfalls are best from the monsoon to early winter, roughly July to December.
For how to get there, when to go and where to stay, see our Ranchi travel guide.
