Nature Travel in Karnataka

Karnataka's Malnad hills hold some of the wettest forests in India, and the Deccan beyond them has a stark, rocky beauty of its own.

4 min read · Updated September 2026

Karnataka has two very different nature faces. In the west, the Malnad region of the Western Ghats gets heavy monsoon rain, which feeds evergreen forest, grassland ridges and some of India's best-known waterfalls. East of the hills, the Deccan plateau is drier, with granite boulders, scrub and river gorges.

Many of the best trails in the Ghats run through reserved forest or national parks. Karnataka's forest department has moved most trek bookings online in recent years, so check the official booking portal before planning a hike.

Quick answer

The best places for nature travel in Karnataka are Jog Falls in the monsoon, the rainforest around Agumbe, the grassland treks of Kudremukh and Kodachadri, the coffee hills of Coorg and Chikmagalur, the Kali river at Dandeli, and Hampi's granite boulders on the Tungabhadra. September to February suits most trips; the monsoon (June to September) is the time for waterfalls.

Key takeaways

  • The Malnad hills are the wettest part of Karnataka and most beautiful just after the monsoon.
  • Jog Falls depends on dam releases and rain; it is fullest in the monsoon and thin in summer.
  • Mullayanagiri near Chikmagalur is widely cited as Karnataka's highest peak.
  • Many forest treks need advance online booking with the forest department; check the current rules.
  • Hampi's boulder landscape is best from November to February, when it is cooler.

Waterfalls of the Ghats

Jog Falls

Jog Falls on the Sharavathi river
Jog Falls

The Sharavathi river drops in four streams into a deep gorge near Sagara. Flow depends on rain and on the Linganamakki dam upstream, so the falls can be thin outside the monsoon.

Hebbe Falls

Abbey and Iruppu falls in Coorg, and Hebbe and Kallathigiri near Chikmagalur, are short walks or drives from the towns.

Agumbe and the rainforest belt

Agumbe, in Shivamogga district, is one of the wettest places in South India and sits in dense evergreen forest. It is known for its sunset viewpoint over the coastal plain and for rainforest research, including long-running studies of the king cobra. The nearby forests around Sringeri and Sharavathi are similar. The best way to see them is on a guided walk; leeches are part of the monsoon experience.

Grassland ridges: Kudremukh and Kodachadri

Kudremukh

Grassland slopes near Mullayanagiri, Chikmagalur
Grasslands of Chikmagalur

Rolling shola grassland inside Kudremukh National Park, named for the horse-face profile of its main peak. The trek is regulated and needs a forest department booking and a guide.

Kodachadri

A grassy peak above forest near Kollur, reached by jeep track or on foot, with wide views over the Ghats.

Hill stations in Karnataka

Coorg and Chikmagalur

Coffee grows under a canopy of native trees in Coorg and Chikmagalur, which keeps these hills unusually green and good for birds. Coorg also has Talakaveri, the traditional source of the Kaveri, and the Brahmagiri hills on the Kerala border. Plantation stays are the usual base.

Rivers: Dandeli and the Kaveri

Dandeli sits on the Kali river in Uttara Kannada, surrounded by forest; rafting and kayaking are run by operators when water levels allow. On the Kaveri, the Shivanasamudra falls and the Bheemeshwari and Galibore stretches are within reach of Bengaluru.

Hampi and the Deccan boulders

Around Hampi, weathered granite boulders pile into hills along the Tungabhadra, with paddy and banana fields between them. The ruins are a heritage site, but the landscape itself is one of India's most striking natural settings. Sunrise from Matanga hill and a coracle ride on the river are the classic experiences.

When to go

The monsoon runs from June to September and is very heavy in the Ghats; waterfalls are at their best, but trails can close and roads slip. September to February is the sweet spot for most of the state. March to May is hot on the Deccan but still pleasant in Coorg and Chikmagalur.

Safety

  • Book forest treks through the official portal; unregistered treks may be turned back.
  • Swimming at waterfalls and in rivers is dangerous; follow local bans.
  • Stay on marked trails and viewpoints, and heed local closures after heavy rain.
  • Permits, entry rules, seasonal closures and timings change; check official sources before you go.
  • Carry your waste back, avoid loud music and never feed wildlife.

What to pack

  • Rain jacket or umbrella
  • Walking shoes with grip
  • Binoculars
  • Refillable water bottle
