Coorg, officially Kodagu, is a hilly district in the Western Ghats of southern Karnataka, about five to six hours from Bengaluru. It is India's largest coffee-growing region, and its slopes are covered with coffee shaded by tall trees, along with pepper, cardamom and oranges. Madikeri, at around 1,150 metres, is the main town.
The Kodava people, Coorg's best-known community, have their own language, martial traditions, dress and cuisine; many of India's army officers and sportspeople have come from here. The things to do in Coorg include estate stays and coffee tours, viewpoints and waterfalls, treks to its highest peaks, the source of the Kaveri at Talakaveri, wildlife at Nagarhole and a Tibetan settlement at Bylakuppe.
Three to four days is ideal. October to March is the best time; the monsoon (June to September) is very wet but lush.
