Mysuru, about 145 km south-west of Bengaluru, was the capital of the Kingdom of Mysore under the Wodeyar dynasty. The city they shaped is spacious and green, with palaces, broad avenues and markets. It is known for its silk, sandalwood, incense, Mysore pak and as a global centre for Ashtanga yoga.
The things to do in Mysore start with the Mysore Palace, which is lit up with thousands of bulbs on Sunday evenings and during Dasara. Chamundi Hill, the Jaganmohan Palace art gallery, St Philomena's Church and Devaraja Market fill a second day. Nearby are Srirangapatna, Tipu Sultan's island fortress, the Ranganathittu bird sanctuary and the Hoysala temple at Somanathapura.
Two days is ideal. October to February is the best season; Dasara, usually in October, is spectacular but very crowded.
For how to get there, when to go and where to stay, see our Mysuru travel guide.
