Mangaluru, in Dakshina Kannada district, lies where the Netravati and Gurupura rivers meet the Arabian Sea. It has been a trading port for centuries and is home to many communities, speaking Tulu, Konkani, Kannada and Beary. The city takes its name from the goddess Mangaladevi.
The things to do in Mangalore include old temples, a chapel covered in Italian frescoes, uncrowded beaches, and cultural traditions such as Yakshagana theatre, bhoota kola rituals and Kambala buffalo races. Above all, it is a food city: fish thalis, ghee roast, kori rotti, neer dosa and Mangalore buns.
Two days covers the city; add a day for Udupi or the Jain towns of Moodbidri and Karkala. October to March is the best season; the monsoon is very heavy.
