Bengaluru, the capital of Karnataka, sits at about 900 metres on the Deccan plateau, which gives it a mild climate most of the year. Founded as a mud fort by Kempe Gowda in 1537, it grew under Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan and then as a British cantonment. Today it is India's technology hub and one of its fastest-growing cities.
The things to do in Bangalore include its famous gardens, Lalbagh and Cubbon Park; palaces and old temples; excellent museums; and above all its food, from dosa breakfasts at tiffin rooms that are decades old to street-food lanes and craft breweries. Within an hour or two are Nandi Hills, Bannerghatta National Park and rocky hills for climbing.
Two days covers the city; add a day for Nandi Hills or Mysuru. Traffic is heavy, so use the metro where you can.
For how to get there, when to go and where to stay, see our Bengaluru travel guide.
