Hampi, in Vijayanagara district of Karnataka, was the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire from the 14th to 16th centuries, one of the largest and richest cities in the world at its height. It was sacked after the Battle of Talikota in 1565. The ruins, spread over more than 40 square kilometres, were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986.
The landscape is as striking as the monuments: piles of golden granite boulders, the Tungabhadra river and green paddy and banana fields. Things to do in Hampi fall into the Sacred Centre around Virupaksha Temple and the river, and the Royal Centre with its palaces, baths and stables, plus Anegundi across the river.
Three days is ideal. October to February is the best time; summers are extremely hot.

Virupaksha Temple, dedicated to Shiva as Virupaksha, is older than the Vijayanagara Empire and still an active place of worship. Its tall eastern gopuram dominates Hampi Bazaar. Inside, look for the pinhole camera effect, where an inverted image of the gopuram appears on a wall.

Vittala Temple
See the stone chariot and musical pillars
The Vittala Temple complex is Hampi's finest monument. Its stone chariot, a shrine to Garuda built to look like a temple car, appears on the Indian 50-rupee note. The maha mandapa has pillars said to produce musical notes when tapped; visitors are no longer allowed to tap them, to prevent damage.

The Queen's Bath is a plain building from outside with an ornate interior: arched corridors and projecting balconies around a large pool. It was likely a royal pleasure bath.
See Ugra Narasimha and Badavilinga
The Ugra Narasimha is a monolithic statue about 6.7 metres tall of Vishnu's man-lion form. Next to it, the Badavilinga, a large lingam, stands in water inside a small shrine. The Underground Shiva Temple is nearby.

Cross to Anegundi and Anjanadri Hill

Across the river, Anegundi is an older village with houses, craft workshops making banana-fibre products, and the Pampa Sarovar. Anjanadri Hill, believed by many to be the birthplace of Hanuman, has a temple at the top reached by about 575 steps and superb sunset views.

Cycle around Hampi
Renting a bicycle or an electric scooter is a good way to move between the Sacred and Royal centres. The roads are mostly flat, but it gets very hot by midday.

At the foot of Hemakuta Hill, two giant monolithic Ganesha statues sit in open halls: Sasivekalu (mustard seed Ganesha) and the larger Kadalekalu (gram seed Ganesha), named after the shape of their bellies. Both are carved from single boulders.
Visit the Hampi Bazaar and Virupapur
Hampi Bazaar, the long colonnaded street in front of Virupaksha, once held a busy market; its stone pavilions remain. Across the river by ferry, Virupapur Gaddi was long a backpacker hub of guesthouses and cafés, though many were demolished for heritage protection; check what is operating.
