Karnataka was ruled by some of India's great temple-building dynasties: the Chalukyas of Badami, the Rashtrakutas, the Hoysalas and the Vijayanagara emperors. The Bahmani and Adil Shahi sultans built in the north, and the Wadiyars ruled from Mysuru.
Its three UNESCO cultural sites are the Group of Monuments at Hampi (1986), the Group of Monuments at Pattadakal (1987) and the Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysalas (2023) at Belur, Halebidu and Somanathapura. Much of the rest, from Badami to Bidar, is quiet and rewarding.

A short history
The Chalukyas of Badami ruled the Deccan from the 6th to the 8th centuries and experimented with temple forms at Aihole and Pattadakal. The Rashtrakutas followed, and the Hoysalas ruled from Halebidu in the 12th and 13th centuries. The Vijayanagara empire, founded in 1336, made Hampi one of the largest cities of its time until its defeat in 1565. In the north, the Bahmani and Adil Shahi sultans built at Bidar and Vijayapura. The Wadiyars ruled Mysore, apart from the period of Haidar Ali and Tipu Sultan, until 1947.
Getting around
Bengaluru is the main gateway. Mysuru and Hassan are easy by road or rail. Hampi is reached via Hosapete station or the airports at Hubballi and Vijayanagar, and Badami has its own station. A car and driver is the most practical way to link the northern sites.
When to go
