Heritage Tourism in Maharashtra: Caves, Forts and Mumbai's Architecture

Maharashtra has more UNESCO cultural sites than any other Indian state, from ancient cave temples to colonial Mumbai and the Maratha forts.

4 min read · Updated September 2026

Maharashtra's heritage spans more than two thousand years: Buddhist caves cut into the Deccan basalt from around the 2nd century BCE, the Hindu and Jain caves of Ellora, the Yadava fortress of Devagiri (Daulatabad), the Maratha forts of Shivaji Maharaj and his successors, and colonial and Art Deco Mumbai.

It has six UNESCO World Heritage cultural sites: the Ajanta Caves and Ellora Caves (1983), the Elephanta Caves (1987), Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (2004), the Victorian Gothic and Art Deco Ensembles of Mumbai (2018) and the Maratha Military Landscapes of India (2025), which it shares with Tamil Nadu.

Quick answer

Maharashtra's heritage highlights are the Ajanta, Ellora and Elephanta caves, the Maratha forts such as Raigad, Shivneri and Sindhudurg (UNESCO 2025), Mumbai's CSMT and Victorian and Art Deco buildings, Daulatabad and Bibi ka Maqbara near Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, the caves of Karla, Bhaja and Kanheri, and Pune's Maratha-era sites. Visit between October and March, or in the monsoon for forts.

A short history

Buddhist monastic communities carved caves along trade routes through the Western Ghats from around the 2nd century BCE, supported by merchants and rulers such as the Satavahanas. The Rashtrakutas and Yadavas followed, then the Delhi Sultanate, the Bahmanis and the Nizam Shahis. In the 17th century Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj founded the Maratha state, which grew into a power across much of India. The British took Bombay from the Portuguese in 1661, and it grew into one of Asia's great commercial cities.

Getting around

Mumbai and Pune are the main gateways. Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, the base for Ajanta and Ellora, has flights and trains. Forts are usually reached by road and on foot; the coastal forts are best combined with a Konkan road trip.

When to go

  • October to March: caves, cities and coastal forts.
  • July to September: fort treks in the green Sahyadri, with care on slippery paths.
  • August or September: Ganeshotsav in Mumbai and Pune.

Where to stay

Stay in south Mumbai for the Fort precinct, Colaba and the Elephanta ferries. Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar is the base for Ajanta, Ellora and Daulatabad; some travellers also stay near Ajanta to see the caves at opening time. For the Konkan sea forts, homestays in Malvan, Dapoli and Alibaug are good bases.

Lesser-known heritage

  • Lonar, with its crater lake and old temples.
  • The Pitalkhora caves near Chalisgaon.
  • Nashik's Pandavleni caves.
  • Kolhapur's New Palace museum and Panhala fort.

Safety

  • Timings, weekly closures and tickets change; check the ASI, state tourism or the site before you go.
  • Living temples, mosques and shrines set their own rules on dress, entry and photography; follow what is posted.

What to pack

  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Scarf or shawl for places of worship
  • Hat, sunscreen and water
  • Photo ID for tickets
