Palaces in India: Royal Heritage and How to Visit

India's palaces range from Mughal and Rajput halls to Indo-Saracenic mansions, and many are still home to former royal families.

4 min read · Updated September 2026

Before 1947 India had hundreds of princely states, and their rulers built palaces that mixed Rajput, Mughal, Deccan, European and Indo-Saracenic styles. Many are now museums, some are hotels, and a few are still partly lived in by the former royal families.

This guide covers palaces you can visit as heritage sites. Where a palace is also a hotel, we note it, but staying in one is a different kind of trip; our luxury holidays page covers that.

Quick answer

India's best-known palaces include the City Palace and Hawa Mahal in Jaipur, the City Palace in Udaipur, Umaid Bhawan in Jodhpur, Mysore Palace, Laxmi Vilas Palace in Vadodara, Chowmahalla Palace in Hyderabad, and the Padmanabhapuram and Mattancherry palaces in the south. Many have museums; some are partly hotels or royal residences, so only certain areas are open to visitors.

Key takeaways

  • Rajasthan has the greatest number of visitable palaces.
  • Mysore Palace is illuminated on Sunday and public-holiday evenings and during Dasara; check timings.
  • Several palaces are still partly royal residences, so only some areas are open.
  • Palace hotels (such as Udaipur's Lake Palace and Hyderabad's Falaknuma) usually restrict entry to guests.
  • Photography rules vary; some museums charge a camera fee or ban photography inside.

A note on palace hotels

Several palaces now operate as hotels, including the Lake Palace and parts of Umaid Bhawan and Falaknuma. These are accommodation choices rather than heritage sites open to the public, and entry is usually limited to guests or restaurant bookings. For palace stays, see our luxury holidays packages.

Palace styles

Rajput palaces such as Amber and Udaipur's City Palace combine courtyards, screened windows (jharokhas) and mirror work. Mughal palaces in the Red Fort and Agra Fort use marble pavilions and gardens. The 19th- and early 20th-century palaces of Mysuru, Vadodara, Jodhpur and Gwalior mix Indian and European ideas in the Indo-Saracenic style, while Kerala's palaces are built in timber with sloping tiled roofs suited to heavy rain.

Tips

  • Buy composite tickets where they exist, such as Jaipur's combined monument ticket.
  • Take the audio guide at Mehrangarh and the City Palaces; they add a great deal.
  • Many palace museums close by 5 pm; start with them and keep the evening for lakes and markets.

Safety

  • Follow museum rules on photography and bags; some charge camera fees.
  • Palaces that are royal residences keep some areas closed; respect the barriers.
  • Timings, closures and tickets are set by the ASI, state departments or trusts and change from time to time; check official sources before you go.

What to pack

  • Comfortable shoes
  • Camera (check fees)
  • Photo ID
  • Light layers
