Vadodara (Baroda) was the capital of the Gaekwad rulers of the Marathas. Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III (reigned 1875β1939) made it one of India's most progressive princely states, founding schools, libraries, a university and museums, and building grand palaces.
The things to do in Vadodara include the enormous Laxmi Vilas Palace and its museum of paintings by Raja Ravi Varma, the Baroda Museum in Sayaji Baug, temples and lakes, and the city's famous Navratri garba. Nearby are the ruined Sultanate city of Champaner and the hill shrine of Pavagadh, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Statue of Unity.
One or two days is enough. October to February is the most comfortable time; Navratri, in September or October, is the highlight of the year.

Laxmi Vilas Palace, completed in 1890 for Sayajirao Gaekwad III, is often described as one of the largest private residences ever built, about four times the size of Buckingham Palace. Its Indo-Saracenic halls have mosaics, stained glass and a Durbar Hall; an audio tour covers the public rooms, and the grounds include a golf course.
Look for the Venetian mosaics in the Durbar Hall, the bronze and marble sculptures by the Italian artist Augusto Felici, and the carefully kept gardens. Parts of the palace are still the royal family's residence and are closed to visitors.
