Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park: Visiting Guide

Champaner is a Sultanate capital left almost untouched after it was abandoned in the 16th century, below the sacred hill of Pavagadh.

4 min read · Updated September 2026

Sultan Mahmud Begada of Gujarat captured the hill fort of Pavagadh in 1484 and built a new capital, Champaner, at its foot. The city flourished for a few decades, then declined after the Mughal emperor Humayun took it in 1535, leaving mosques, palaces, walls and water systems largely intact.

UNESCO inscribed the Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park in 2004. It includes the Islamic city, the older Hindu and Jain remains on Pavagadh hill, and earlier archaeological sites. The hill is also a major pilgrimage site, with the Kalika Mata temple at its summit.

Quick answer

Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park, about 50 km from Vadodara, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004. It combines the 16th-century capital of Sultan Mahmud Begada, with its Jami Masjid, other mosques, stepwells and walls, and Pavagadh hill, crowned by the Kalika Mata temple and reached partly by ropeway. Allow a full day, and visit from October to March or in the green monsoon.

A short history

Pavagadh was a hill fort of the Khichi Chauhan Rajputs before Sultan Mahmud Begada besieged and captured it in 1484. He rebuilt Champaner below the hill as his capital, with a walled royal enclosure, a grand mosque and water systems. After Humayun's capture of the city in 1535, the capital moved back to Ahmedabad, and Champaner slowly emptied, which is why so much of it survives unaltered.

Tips

  • Hire a car for the day; the mosques are spread over several kilometres.
  • Start with the Jami Masjid in the morning light.
  • Visit Pavagadh on a weekday, and avoid Navratri if you want to see the hill quietly.
  • Carry water and snacks; facilities are limited near the monuments.

When to go

  • October to March: pleasant for walking between monuments.
  • July to September: the hill and plain turn green, with waterfalls; paths can be slippery.
  • Navratri: very heavy crowds on Pavagadh.

Safety

  • Timings, closures and ticket rules are set by the ASI, state archaeology departments or site trusts and change from time to time; check the official website before you go.
  • Do not climb on or touch carvings, and follow the site's rules on photography, drones and tripods.
  • Carry water and a hat; many sites have little shade, and Indian summers are hot.
  • Hold railings on the steps and ropeway queues on Pavagadh.

What to pack

  • Comfortable shoes
  • Hat and water
  • Modest clothing for the temple and mosques
  • Photo ID
  • Snacks for the day
