Gujarat's heritage spans the Harappan civilisation, the Solanki temples and stepwells, the sultanate architecture of Ahmedabad and Champaner, and a living craft culture in Kutch. Its UNESCO cultural sites are the Historic City of Ahmedabad, Rani ki Vav at Patan, Champaner-Pavagadh, and Dholavira.

This 10-day route begins in Ahmedabad and covers the north Gujarat stepwells, Lothal, Kutch and Champaner. Travel by car and driver, and time Kutch for the Rann Utsav if you want the festival.

Where to stay

In Ahmedabad, a heritage house in the old city lets you walk the pols at dawn. In Kutch, choose between Bhuj hotels, village homestays in mud-walled bhungas around Hodka and Dhordo, and the Rann Utsav tent city in season. Dholavira has limited options, including a state tourism resort, so book ahead. Near Champaner, Vadodara is the easiest base.

Food and culture

  • A Gujarati thali in Ahmedabad, and the Manek Chowk night food market.
  • Kutchi dabeli in Mandvi and Bhuj.
  • Uttarayan kite flying in Ahmedabad in mid-January.
  • Navratri garba across the state in September or October.

Gujarat's heritage in brief

Gujarat's story runs from Harappan towns such as Dholavira and Lothal, through the Maitraka and Solanki kingdoms that built temples and stepwells, to the Gujarat Sultanate, which founded Ahmedabad in 1411 and built Champaner. Mughal, Maratha and British rule followed, and the port towns traded with Arabia, Africa and Southeast Asia for centuries. That long mix of peoples and faiths, Hindu, Jain, Muslim and Parsi, still shows in the state's architecture, crafts and food.

Safety

  • Timings, closures and train schedules change; check the ASI, state tourism and IRCTC before you go.
  • Driving times are approximate; allow extra time, and avoid long drives after dark.
  • Carry permits for the white Rann, and ID in the border areas of Kutch.

What to pack

  • Sun protection
  • Warm layers for Kutch nights
  • Modest clothing
  • Cash for craft villages
