Surat, on the Tapi river near the Gulf of Khambhat, was one of the richest ports of Mughal India, where the English, Dutch, Portuguese and French set up trading posts in the 17th century. Today it is one of India's fastest-growing cities, the centre of the diamond cutting and polishing industry and a major hub for synthetic textiles.
The things to do in Surat are less about big monuments and more about the city's life and food. Surtis are famous for loving to eat, and the city is full of food streets and snacks. Heritage sites include Surat Castle and the old European cemeteries, and beaches and historic Dandi are within easy reach.
One or two days is enough. November to February is the best time, when the famous winter snacks are in season.
