Things to Do in Daman: Portuguese Forts, Churches, Beaches & Lake Gardens

A former Portuguese enclave on Gujarat's southern coast, with two walled forts facing each other across a river and beaches popular for weekend breaks.

4 min read · Daman, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, India

Daman, on the Gulf of Khambhat about 190 km north of Mumbai, was held by the Portuguese from 1559 until 1961 and is now part of the union territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. The Daman Ganga river divides it into Moti (big) Daman and Nani (small) Daman, each with its own fort.

The things to do in Daman include walking the walls of Moti Daman's fort, with its baroque church and lighthouse, the Fort of St Jerome in Nani Daman, beaches such as Devka and Jampore, and lake gardens for families. It is a popular weekend escape, partly because its liquor laws differ from neighbouring Gujarat.

One or two days is enough. October to March is the best time.

For how to get there, when to go and where to stay, see our Daman travel guide.

The fort of Moti Daman, completed in the late 16th century, encloses government buildings, old houses and churches within walls and bastions. Walking along the ramparts gives views of the river, the sea and Nani Daman.

Inside, quiet lanes lead past old Portuguese houses with tiled roofs, government offices in colonial buildings, and small squares with statues. It is peaceful in the mornings, when few visitors are around.

The Fort of St Jerome in Nani Daman, smaller than Moti Daman's, has a massive gateway with a statue of St Jerome and giant human figures. Inside are the Church of Our Lady of the Sea and a cemetery.

The fort was built in the 17th century to protect Nani Daman from Mughal attacks. Its walls look over the river mouth, and the grotto and cemetery inside are quiet and atmospheric.

Beaches

Walk the Devka beach promenade

Devka beach has a landscaped promenade with gardens, fountains, lights and an amusement park. The tide goes out a long way, exposing rocky flats. Swimming is not recommended because of currents and rocks.

The promenade is lit up at night with coloured lights and fountains, and it is busy with families and food stalls. Early mornings are calm, when joggers and walkers have it to themselves.
