Orchha, on the Betwa river about 16 km from Jhansi, was founded in the 16th century as the capital of the Bundela Rajputs. Its kings built a fort complex of palaces on an island, soaring temples and a row of cenotaphs (chhatris) by the river. The town never grew into a city, so its monuments stand in a quiet, rural setting.
The things to do in Orchha include the Raja Mahal and Jahangir Mahal, the Ram Raja Temple where Rama is worshipped as a king, the towering Chaturbhuj Temple, the murals of the Laxminarayan Temple, sunset at the chhatris, and rafting or cycling in the countryside.
One or two days is ideal. October to March is the best time.
For how to get there, when to go and where to stay, see our Orchha travel guide.

The fort complex
Explore Raja Mahal

Raja Mahal, begun in the 16th century, has plain exteriors but inner rooms covered in murals of Vishnu's avatars, the Ramayana and court life. From its upper floors there are views over the town and temples.
The palace was built in stages by successive Bundela rulers, and its courtyards, audience halls and zenana quarters show how royal life was organised. Many ceilings still carry their original colours, and bats roost in the darker rooms.
- Time needed
- 1 hour
See Jahangir Mahal

Jahangir Mahal, built by Bir Singh Deo to honour the Mughal emperor Jahangir's visit in the early 17th century, is a grand palace of domes, balconies and turquoise tiles around a central courtyard. Its entrance is guarded by stone elephants.
Climb to the upper terraces for views across the Betwa to the chhatris and temples, and look for the small hanging balconies and the patterned stone screens. The palace mixes Rajput and Mughal features in a way typical of Bundela architecture.

See Rai Praveen Mahal
Rai Praveen Mahal, a smaller palace in a garden, was built for Rai Praveen, a poet and musician at the Orchha court, whose story is told by local guides.

Temples
Visit the Ram Raja Temple

The Ram Raja Temple is the only temple where Rama is worshipped as a king, and police give a guard of honour to the deity daily. According to legend, the idol was meant for the Chaturbhuj Temple but could not be moved from the palace where it was placed.

Climb Chaturbhuj Temple
Chaturbhuj Temple, on a high platform, has one of the tallest temple spires in India. Steep stairs lead up to the roof, with views over Orchha's palaces, temples and the Betwa.
The temple was built on a massive raised platform, and its inner hall has a soaring vaulted ceiling. It was designed to house the Ram Raja idol, which, according to legend, refused to move from the palace.
- Good to know
- Steep, narrow stairs
See Laxminarayan Temple
The Laxminarayan Temple, on a hill west of town, is part fort, part temple, and has some of the finest murals in Orchha, including scenes of the 1857 uprising and the Rani of Jhansi.
River and countryside
Watch sunset at the chhatris
The chhatris, cenotaphs of the Bundela rulers, rise along the Betwa river. The best view is from the far bank at sunset, when the domes reflect in the water.
There are around 14 chhatris, raised on platforms with tiered spires, and vultures have long nested on their tops. A footpath and small bridge let you walk along the riverbank beside them.

Raft or kayak on the Betwa
In the cooler months, gentle rafting and kayaking trips run on the Betwa through rocky channels and islands.
