Madhya Pradesh sits at the heart of India and holds three UNESCO cultural sites: the Khajuraho temples, the Buddhist monuments of Sanchi and the Bhimbetka rock shelters. Around them are towns such as Orchha, Gwalior, Mandu and Maheshwar that are much quieter than their Rajasthani counterparts.

This 11-day route follows a north-to-west line, with trains and flights for the long legs. Mandu is especially beautiful in the monsoon, when its lakes fill and its plateau turns green.

Quick answer

An 11-day Madhya Pradesh heritage itinerary: Gwalior (1 night), Orchha (2), Khajuraho (2), Bhopal (3, with Sanchi, Udayagiri and Bhimbetka), then Indore, Mandu (2) and Maheshwar (1). Use the train from Delhi to Gwalior, road to Orchha and Khajuraho, a flight or long drive to Bhopal, and road for Malwa. October to March is best; Mandu is also lovely in the monsoon.

  • Orchha is about 16 km from Jhansi, which has good train links.
  • Sanchi, Udayagiri and Bhimbetka are day trips from Bhopal.
