Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh, is built around two large lakes. Legend links its name to the 11th-century king Raja Bhoj, who is said to have created the Upper Lake. In the 18th century it became a princely state, ruled for over a century by a line of begums who built mosques, palaces and gardens.
The things to do in Bhopal include boating and sunsets on the Upper Lake, the grand Taj-ul-Masajid and the old city bazaars, and some of the best museums in India, including the Tribal Museum and the open-air Manav Sangrahalaya. Within an hour are two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Buddhist stupas of Sanchi and the prehistoric rock shelters of Bhimbetka.
Two to three days is ideal. October to March is the best time.

Sanchi, about 46 km north-east, has the Great Stupa, first built under Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE, with four richly carved gateways added later. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most important Buddhist monuments in India.
Around the Great Stupa are smaller stupas, an Ashokan pillar, temples and monasteries, and a small museum at the foot of the hill displays the pillar's lion capital and other sculptures. Udayagiri's Gupta-era caves at Vidisha are nearby.

See Bhimbetka
Bhimbetka, about 45 km south, has hundreds of rock shelters with paintings, some thought to be many thousands of years old, showing hunting, dancing and animals. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Visit the Bhojpur temple
The Bhojeshwar Temple at Bhojpur, about 28 km away, is an unfinished 11th-century Shiva temple with a huge lingam over 2 metres tall. Ramps and plans carved into the rock show how it was being built. It is easily combined with Bhimbetka.
