Indore, on the Malwa plateau, was the capital of the Holkar dynasty of the Marathas, whose most famous ruler, Ahilyabai Holkar, is remembered for building temples and ghats across India. Today it is Madhya Pradesh's largest city and its commercial hub, and it has been ranked India's cleanest city in national surveys for several years running.
The things to do in Indore include the Holkar palaces of Rajwada and Lal Bagh, temples such as Khajrana Ganesh and the glass-mirrored Kanch Mandir, and, above all, eating: poha-jalebi in the morning and the night food market of Sarafa Bazaar. Indore is also the best base for Ujjain, Omkareshwar, Maheshwar and Mandu.
One or two days covers the city; add days for the excursions. October to March is the most comfortable time.
For how to get there, when to go and where to stay, see our Indore travel guide.

After the shops close in the evening, food stalls take over until late at night, selling bhutte ka kees (spiced grated corn), garadu (fried yam, in winter), sabudana khichdi, dahi vada, malpua, rabri and many sweets. It is one of India's most famous night food markets.
