Ujjain, on the Shipra river about 55 km from Indore, is one of the seven sacred cities of Hinduism and one of the four sites of the Kumbh Mela, known here as the Simhastha. It was also the capital of ancient Avanti and a centre of astronomy: the Tropic of Cancer passes nearby, and classical Indian astronomers used Ujjain as their prime meridian.
The things to do in Ujjain begin at the Mahakaleshwar Temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, whose pre-dawn Bhasma Aarti is unique. Around it are the Mahakal Lok corridor, ghats on the Shipra, and temples to Kal Bhairav, Harsiddhi, Chintaman Ganesh and Mangalnath, as well as the observatory built by Jai Singh II.
One or two days is enough. October to March is the most comfortable time; the next Simhastha is expected in 2028.
For how to get there, when to go and where to stay, see our Ujjain travel guide.
