Spiritual Tourism in Madhya Pradesh: Ujjain, Omkareshwar, Orchha and Sanchi

Madhya Pradesh has two Jyotirlingas, a Kumbh city, the source of the Narmada and India's best-preserved Buddhist stupas.

4 min read · Updated September 2026

Madhya Pradesh sits at the centre of several pilgrim traditions. Ujjain, on the Shipra, is home to the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga and hosts the Simhastha Kumbh; Omkareshwar, on an island in the Narmada, is another Jyotirlinga. The Narmada itself is sacred along its length, from its source at Amarkantak to the ghats of Maheshwar.

The state also holds Orchha, where Rama is worshipped as a king, Chitrakoot on the border with Uttar Pradesh, the Buddhist stupas of Sanchi and Jain tirthas at Sonagiri and Kundalpur. Indore and Bhopal are the main gateways.

Quick answer

Madhya Pradesh's main spiritual destinations are Ujjain (Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, Harsiddhi and Kal Bhairav), Omkareshwar (Jyotirlinga on the Narmada), Maheshwar, Orchha's Ram Raja temple, Chitrakoot, Amarkantak and Maihar. Sanchi is a major Buddhist site, and Sonagiri and Kundalpur are Jain tirthas. Ujjain and Omkareshwar are 140 km apart and easily combined from Indore. The Ujjain Simhastha runs from 27 March to 27 May 2028.

Where to stay and when to go

  • Indore: the best base for Ujjain and Omkareshwar, with the most hotels.
  • Ujjain and Omkareshwar: hotels and dharamshalas near the temples; very busy around Maha Shivratri and Shravan.
  • October to March is best; the monsoon is lovely along the Narmada but hot and humid before it.
  • The Ujjain Simhastha (27 March to 27 May 2028) will bring very large crowds and high demand for rooms.

Safety

  • Darshan waits vary from minutes to many hours; no one can guarantee quick darshan, so plan buffer time.
  • Dress modestly and follow each temple's rules on dress, phones and photography.
  • Book darshan, aarti and accommodation only on official temple or government websites.
  • Take care on the ghats and follow river-safety notices on the Narmada and Shipra.

What to pack

  • Light cotton clothing
  • Traditional clothes if attending the Bhasma Aarti (check the temple's dress rules)
  • Slip-on footwear
  • ID for bookings
