Kumbh Mela: The Four Sites, the Cycle and the Next Melas

The Kumbh Mela is among the largest religious gatherings on earth, held in turn at four river towns.

According to Hindu tradition, drops of amrit (the nectar of immortality) fell at four places during the churning of the ocean: Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain and Nashik. A Kumbh Mela is held at each of these in turn, at dates fixed by the positions of Jupiter, the Sun and the Moon, when bathing in the river is believed to be especially meritorious.

Millions of pilgrims, sadhus of the akharas (monastic orders) and visitors gather for weeks in temporary tent cities. UNESCO added the Kumbh Mela to its list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2017.

Quick answer

The Kumbh Mela is held in rotation at Prayagraj (Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati), Haridwar (Ganga), Ujjain (Shipra) and Nashik-Trimbakeshwar (Godavari). The last Maha Kumbh was at Prayagraj in January and February 2025. Announced next dates are the Haridwar Ardh Kumbh (14 January to 20 April 2027), the Nashik-Trimbakeshwar Simhastha (main bathing in August and September 2027) and the Ujjain Simhastha (27 March to 27 May 2028).

Key takeaways

  • The four Kumbh sites are Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain and Nashik-Trimbakeshwar.
  • Each site hosts a Kumbh about every 12 years; Prayagraj and Haridwar also host an Ardh (half) Kumbh.
  • The main bathing days, now called Amrit Snan, feature processions of the akharas.
  • Next: Haridwar 2027, Nashik-Trimbakeshwar 2027 and Ujjain 2028.
  • Book stays early and plan for very large crowds.

How the cycle works

Each site hosts a full Kumbh roughly every twelve years, following Jupiter's cycle. Prayagraj and Haridwar also hold an Ardh (half) Kumbh about six years after the full Kumbh. At Ujjain and Nashik the mela is called Simhastha because it falls when Jupiter is in Simha (Leo). Prayagraj also holds the Magh Mela every year in January and February.

The most important days are the Amrit Snan (formerly called Shahi Snan) days, when the akharas, led by the Naga sadhus, bathe in procession before the public.

  • Stay hydrated and carry basic medicines.
  • Use only official information for dates, routes and camp bookings.
