Jabalpur, on the banks of the Narmada in central Madhya Pradesh, was once part of the Gond kingdom of Garha, whose queen Rani Durgavati died fighting the Mughals in 1564. Today it is a busy city and a major railway junction.
The things to do in Jabalpur centre on Bhedaghat, where the Narmada flows through a gorge of white and grey marble cliffs and plunges over Dhuandhar Falls. The 10th-century Chausath Yogini Temple, the Gond fort of Madan Mahal and the evening aarti at Gwarighat add history and faith. Jabalpur is also the gateway to Kanha and Bandhavgarh tiger reserves.
One day covers Jabalpur's sights. October to March is the most comfortable time; the Marble Rocks are especially magical on full-moon nights.
For how to get there, when to go and where to stay, see our Jabalpur travel guide.

Bhedaghat
Take a boat through the Marble Rocks
At Bhedaghat, about 20 km from the city, boats glide for about an hour through a gorge where marble cliffs rise up to around 30 metres on both sides, their colours changing with the light. Boatmen narrate the sights with rhymes and jokes. On full-moon nights, when boating is allowed, the cliffs glow silver.
Along the way, look for formations the boatmen call the elephant's foot and monkey's jump, where the cliffs almost meet. The quiet stretches of water under the cliffs are home to kingfishers and cormorants.

See Dhuandhar Falls

Dhuandhar Falls, a short distance upstream, is where the Narmada plunges into the gorge, throwing up a cloud of spray that gives it the name smoke cascade. A ropeway crosses the gorge for views of the falls from above.
A walkway leads to viewing points close to the falls, and small stalls line the path. The spray and roar are strongest just after the monsoon.
