Gokarna is a temple town in Uttara Kannada district, Karnataka, where the Aghanashini river meets the Arabian Sea. For Hindus it is one of the most sacred Shiva pilgrimage centres in South India, home of the Mahabaleshwar Temple and its Atmalinga. For travellers, it is also known for a string of beautiful beaches just south of town.
The things to do in Gokarna mix both sides: temple visits and the old car street in the morning, then beaches, a clifftop trek between coves, swimming, kayaking and sunsets. It is quieter and less developed than Goa, with simple shacks and guesthouses rather than big resorts.
Three days is enough. October to February is best; the monsoon brings rough seas and closes most beach businesses.

Dress codes apply: men may be asked to remove shirts inside the sanctum, and non-Hindus may have restricted access to the inner shrine.

A trail over the headlands links Gokarna Main Beach, Kudle, Om, Half Moon and Paradise beaches, about 8 to 10 km in all. Parts are rocky and steep; wear good shoes, carry water and start early to avoid the midday heat. Boats can bring you back from Half Moon or Paradise.
