Best Beaches in Karnataka: Gokarna, Udupi, Murudeshwar and Karwar

Karnataka's short coast has some of India's most varied beaches: coves reached on foot, basalt islands, a temple on the sea and a road squeezed between river and ocean.

5 min read · Updated September 2026

Karnataka's coastline, about 320 km long, runs from Karwar near the Goa border to Mangaluru in the south, with the Western Ghats rising close behind. It is less developed than Goa or Kerala, with a mix of temple towns, fishing harbours and quiet beaches.

The highlights are Gokarna's chain of coves, the beaches and islands around Udupi, the giant Shiva statue at Murudeshwar and the Maravanthe coast road. This guide runs from north to south.

Quick answer

The best beaches in Karnataka are Gokarna's Kudle, Om, Half Moon and Paradise beaches, linked by a coastal trail; Murudeshwar, the base for Netrani Island dives; Malpe and St Mary's Island near Udupi; Kaup with its lighthouse; the Blue Flag beaches at Padubidri and Kasarkod; and Maravanthe, where the highway runs between the sea and a river. Go from October to March.

Key takeaways

  • Gokarna's beaches (Kudle, Om, Half Moon, Paradise) are linked by a cliff-top walking trail.
  • St Mary's Island, off Malpe, has columnar basalt rocks; boats run only outside the monsoon.
  • Murudeshwar is the base for trips to Netrani Island, the best dive site on the mainland coast.
  • Padubidri (Udupi) and Kasarkod (Honnavar) hold Blue Flag certification.
  • The sea is rough and many boat services stop from about June to September.

When to go

October to March is the main season, with calmer seas and boats running to St Mary's Island and Netrani. April and May are hot. From about June to September, the monsoon makes the sea rough; swimming is unsafe and most boat services stop.

Planning a Karnataka coast trip

  • Mangaluru airport serves Udupi and the south coast; Goa's airports are closer for Karwar and Gokarna.
  • Gokarna Road, Kumta, Murudeshwar, Udupi and Mangaluru are on the Konkan Railway.
  • A good five-day route: Gokarna (two nights), Murudeshwar with a Netrani trip, then Udupi and Malpe.
  • Gokarna is also easy to combine with south Goa.

Safety

  • Swim only at beaches with lifeguards, inside the flagged zone, and never when a red flag is up or during the monsoon.
  • The Gokarna trail follows cliffs; walk in daylight and carry water.
  • Om and other coves can have strong currents; do not swim when warned.
  • Boats to St Mary's Island and Netrani stop in the monsoon; do not take unofficial boats in rough seas.
  • Mangaluru city beaches often restrict swimming; follow lifeguards and police instructions.

What to pack

  • Walking shoes for the Gokarna trail
  • Swimwear and sunscreen
  • Water and snacks for secluded coves
  • Modest clothes for temple towns
