Best Beaches in Puducherry: Paradise, Serenity, Auroville and Rock Beach

Puducherry's beaches range from a seafront promenade for evening walks to a sandbar you reach by boat. Here is what each is for.

Puducherry (Pondicherry), the former French enclave on the Coromandel coast, has a sea wall rather than a sandy beach in its historic centre. For sand and swimming, visitors head a few kilometres out of town: south to Paradise Beach and Eden beach, or north to Serenity and the beaches near Auroville, which lie just across the border in Tamil Nadu.

This guide explains which beach suits what. For the French Quarter, cafes and Auroville, see things to do in Pondicherry.

Quick answer

The best beaches around Puducherry are Paradise Beach, a sandbar reached by boat from the Chunnambar boat house south of town; Serenity Beach in Kottakuppam for surf lessons; the beaches near Auroville for quiet; and Eden beach at Chinna Veerampattinam. The Promenade (Rock Beach) in the French Quarter is for evening walks, not swimming. Visit from about November to March.

Key takeaways

  • Rock Beach (the Promenade) is a sea wall for walks; swimming is not allowed there.
  • Paradise Beach is reached by a short boat ride from the Chunnambar boat house; boats stop by late afternoon.
  • Serenity Beach, about 5 km north, has surf schools.
  • Auroville's beaches and Serenity are technically in Tamil Nadu, just outside Puducherry's boundary.
  • The north-east monsoon (about October to December) brings heavy rain and rough sea.

Goubert Avenue runs along the sea wall in the French Quarter, with the Gandhi statue, the old lighthouse and the war memorial. It is closed to traffic at certain hours, and crowds come for evening walks and sunrise. Swimming is not allowed: the shore is rocks and the water deepens suddenly.
