Pondicherry (Puducherry) was the capital of French India from the 17th century until 1954, and it became part of India formally in 1962. The town was laid out on a grid, with a French Quarter (Ville Blanche) of colonial villas by the sea and a Tamil Quarter of traditional houses with verandas, separated by a canal.
The things to do in Pondicherry include walking and cycling through its heritage streets, sunrise on the Promenade, the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, the international township of Auroville, Paradise Beach and the backwaters of Chunnambar, churches and temples, and a café and bakery scene with French and South Indian influences.
Two to three days is ideal. October to March is the best time; summer is hot and humid, and the north-east monsoon brings rain in October and November.
For how to get there, when to go and where to stay, see our Pondicherry travel guide.

The heritage town
Walk through the French Quarter
The French Quarter's streets, such as Rue Romain Rolland, Rue Dumas and Rue Suffren, are lined with yellow, white and pink villas, bougainvillea and old French institutions, including the French Consulate, the Alliance Française and the Lycée Français. Morning and late afternoon are the best times for walking or cycling.
Look for Tamil and French street names side by side, old colonial mansions converted into heritage hotels, and the white Hôtel de Ville (town hall) on the seafront. The quarter is compact, so a two-hour loop covers most of it.

Watch sunrise on the Promenade
The Promenade (Beach Road, Goubert Avenue) runs along the rocky shore past the Gandhi statue, the old lighthouse, the War Memorial and the old customs house. At sunrise and in the evening, it is closed to traffic and fills with walkers. The sea here is rough and rocky; swimming is not advised.
