Chennai to Pondicherry Road Trip: The East Coast Road and Stops

The East Coast Road hugs the Bay of Bengal from Chennai to Pondicherry, with beaches and Pallava monuments along the way.

4 min read · Updated September 2026

The East Coast Road (ECR) runs south from Chennai along the Bay of Bengal, passing fishing villages, beach resorts and the UNESCO-listed monuments at Mahabalipuram before reaching Pondicherry. It is one of India's most popular coastal drives and an easy weekend trip.

An inland alternative via the GST Road (NH32) and Tindivanam is sometimes faster, but the ECR is the scenic choice.

Quick answer

Chennai to Pondicherry is about 150 km along the East Coast Road and usually takes 3 to 4 hours with a stop or two. Highlights en route include Covelong beach, DakshinaChitra, the Madras Crocodile Bank, Mahabalipuram's Shore Temple and rathas, and the salt pans near Marakkanam. November to February is the best season; avoid the peak of the north-east monsoon in October and November.

Key takeaways

  • The ECR is the scenic coastal route; the GST Road via Tindivanam is the inland option.
  • Mahabalipuram is the obvious half-day stop, about 55 km from Chennai.
  • Weekend traffic leaving Chennai can be heavy; start early.
  • Cyclists and pedestrians use the ECR; drive carefully through villages.
  • The north-east monsoon (October to December) brings heavy rain to this coast.

Driving considerations

  • The ECR is a busy two- and four-lane road with frequent villages; keep speeds moderate.
  • Toll plazas on the ECR accept FASTag.
  • Weekend evenings back into Chennai are slow; return early or late.
  • Parking in Pondicherry's French quarter is limited; use hotel parking.

Going beyond Pondicherry

The ECR continues south past Cuddalore to Chidambaram, with its great Nataraja temple, and the mangroves of Pichavaram, then on to the old Danish town of Tranquebar (Tharangambadi) and Karaikal. From there, inland roads lead to the Chola temples around Kumbakonam and Thanjavur, making a satisfying week-long coastal and temple loop.

Pondicherry also makes a good base for day trips inland to Gingee fort, one of the most impressive hill forts in Tamil Nadu.

Food along the way

Seafood shacks line the ECR near Covelong and Mahabalipuram, and Pondicherry's cafés serve French-influenced bakes alongside Tamil and Creole dishes. Try filter coffee and a meals plate at a roadside hotel on the way.

Beaches and safety

  • Many beaches along the ECR have strong currents; swim only where lifeguards are present.
  • Respect fishing villages; do not drive onto beaches or block landing areas.
  • Keep valuables out of sight when parked at popular beaches.
  • Watch for cyclists, cattle and pedestrians around Mahabalipuram and Marakkanam, especially after dark.
  • Carry water and sun protection; there is little shade at the beaches and monuments.

When to go

November to February is best, with mild days and sea breezes, though November can be wet. March to June is hot and humid. The north-east monsoon (October to December) brings heavy rain and occasional cyclones; check forecasts.

Safety

  • Mountain roads close or slow down after heavy rain, snow or landslides; check road status and weather updates each morning and avoid driving after dark.
  • Permits, tolls, entry fees, pass openings and road works change; check official sources shortly before you travel.
  • Distances and driving times are approximate and vary with traffic, weather, road works and stops.

What to pack

  • Driving licence, RC, insurance and PUC certificate, with copies
  • Warm layers and a rain jacket
  • Motion-sickness tablets for winding roads
  • Cash for small towns and barriers
