Food Road Trips in India: Highway Dhabas and Regional Food Trails

In India, what you eat on the road is often the most memorable part of the drive.

4 min read · Updated September 2026

India's highways are lined with dhabas, roadside kitchens and small-town restaurants that serve some of the country's best regional food. Planning a road trip around food means timing your drive so that breakfast, lunch and tea fall at the places worth stopping for, and choosing routes that pass through the regions whose cooking you want to try.

We do not rank or name individual restaurants, which change often. Instead, this guide points to the towns and regions known for particular dishes.

Quick answer

The best food road trips in India include the Grand Trunk Road from Delhi through Murthal to Amritsar for parathas and Punjabi food, Rajasthan's highways for kachoris, dal-baati and Jodhpur's mirchi vadas, the Konkan and Malvan coast for seafood, coastal Karnataka for Mangalorean dishes, Kerala's backwaters for fish curries, Karaikudi for Chettinad cooking, Hyderabad for biryani, and Bengal's highways for fish and sweets.

Key takeaways

  • Plan the drive around meal stops in towns known for particular dishes.
  • Busy dhabas with high turnover are usually the safest choice.
  • Drink bottled or filtered water and carry your own.
  • Coastal seafood is best in the dry season, outside the monsoon fishing ban.
  • Regional specialities often differ from what city restaurants call by the same name.

The Grand Trunk Road

North of Delhi, the famous dhabas at Murthal are a classic first stop, and the road on through Haryana and Punjab to Amritsar is lined with places serving parathas, dal makhani and lassi. In Amritsar, kulchas and the langar at the Golden Temple are highlights.

Rajasthan

Rajasthani highway food is simple and filling: kachoris for breakfast, dal-baati-churma and gatte for lunch, and chai stops in small towns. Jodhpur is known for mirchi vadas and makhaniya lassi, Bikaner for bhujia, and Pushkar for vegetarian cafés.

Planning a food-focused drive

Time your departure so that breakfast falls at a town known for it: Murthal from Delhi, Maddur or Srirangapatna from Bengaluru, or Mahabalipuram from Chennai. Plan lunch in a district town rather than on an empty stretch of expressway, where choices are limited. Keep an evening free in food cities such as Amritsar, Jodhpur, Hyderabad and Karaikudi to walk the old bazaars.

Carry a cool box for sweets and snacks to take home, and ask locally about seasonal specialities such as mangoes in the Konkan in April and May, or winter sarson ka saag in Punjab.

When to go

October to March is best for most food road trips, with comfortable driving weather. Seafood on the west coast is best outside the monsoon, when a fishing ban usually applies from about June to July. Ramzan brings special dishes such as haleem to Hyderabad and other cities.

Safety

  • Mountain roads close or slow down after heavy rain, snow or landslides; check road status and weather updates each morning and avoid driving after dark.
  • Permits, tolls, entry fees, pass openings and road works change; check official sources shortly before you travel.
  • Distances and driving times are approximate and vary with traffic, weather, road works and stops.

What to pack

  • Driving licence, RC, insurance and PUC certificate, with copies
  • Warm layers and a rain jacket
  • Motion-sickness tablets for winding roads
  • Cash for small towns and barriers
