Road Trips from Kolkata: Coast, Terracotta Towns and the Hills

From Kolkata, weekend drives lead to the seaside, to Bengal's terracotta towns and to the red-soil hills of Purulia.

4 min read · Updated September 2026

Kolkata's weekend drives head in three directions. South-west, NH16 and state roads reach the beaches at Digha, Mandarmani and Tajpur. West, the roads lead to Bishnupur's terracotta temples, Santiniketan's university town, and the reservoirs and hills of Bankura and Purulia. South, a short drive reaches the jetties for the Sundarbans, where boats take over.

For longer trips, Puri in Odisha and Darjeeling in the Himalaya are both reachable by road, though many travellers fly or take the train for the Darjeeling leg.

Quick answer

The best road trips from Kolkata are Mandarmani (about 170 km), Digha (about 185 km), Bishnupur (about 150 km), Santiniketan (about 160 km), Mukutmanipur (about 230 km), Purulia's Ajodhya Hills (about 300 km), the Sundarbans (about 100 km to the jetties, then by boat) and, for longer trips, Puri (about 500 km) and Darjeeling (about 600 km). October to March is best; avoid cyclone warnings on the coast.

Key takeaways

  • Digha and Mandarmani are the classic weekend beach drives.
  • Bishnupur and Santiniketan combine well in a long weekend.
  • Purulia's Ajodhya Hills are best in winter and spring, when the palash flowers bloom.
  • For the Sundarbans, drive to Godkhali or a similar jetty and continue by boat.
  • The Bay of Bengal's cyclone seasons can disrupt coastal trips.

Bankura and Purulia

West of Bishnupur, Mukutmanipur's reservoir and the Susunia and Joychandi hills lead on to Purulia's Ajodhya Hills, a plateau of red soil, dams and forest where palash trees flower in late winter and spring. Roads are quieter here, and homestays are simple.

The Sundarbans

The Sundarbans are reached by driving to a jetty such as Godkhali or Sonakhali, then continuing by boat; the forest itself has no roads. Most visitors book boat tours with permits included.

Tips for driving out of Kolkata

  • Leave early to clear the Vidyasagar Setu and Kona Expressway before traffic builds.
  • Check cyclone warnings before coastal trips from April to June and October to December.
  • Purulia is hot from April to June; go in winter or spring.

Planning a long weekend

With three days, combine Bishnupur with Mukutmanipur, or Santiniketan with a village crafts tour. For the coast, spend two nights at Mandarmani or Tajpur, which are quieter than Digha. With four or five days, continue from Digha into Odisha to Chandipur, where the sea retreats kilometres at low tide, or head west to Purulia's hills.

Bengali food is part of every trip: fish fry and rolls on the highway, and sweets at the old shops in Bishnupur and Santiniketan.

When to go

October to March is best, with pleasant weather for the coast and the plateau. Spring brings palash blooms to Purulia. Summer is hot and humid, and the monsoon (June to September) brings heavy rain; the coast is rough and cyclones are possible in the shoulder months.

Safety

  • Mountain roads close or slow down after heavy rain, snow or landslides; check road status and weather updates each morning and avoid driving after dark.
  • Permits, tolls, entry fees, pass openings and road works change; check official sources shortly before you travel.
  • Distances and driving times are approximate and vary with traffic, weather, road works and stops.

What to pack

  • Driving licence, RC, insurance and PUC certificate, with copies
  • Warm layers and a rain jacket
  • Motion-sickness tablets for winding roads
  • Cash for small towns and barriers
