Heritage Tourism in West Bengal: Kolkata, Bishnupur, Murshidabad and Santiniketan

West Bengal's heritage runs from terracotta temples and Nawabi palaces to Tagore's Santiniketan and the old capital of British India.

Bengal has been a centre of learning, trade and art for centuries. The Pala kings supported Buddhist learning, the Bengal Sultanate built at Gaur and Pandua, the Malla kings raised terracotta temples at Bishnupur, and the Nawabs ruled from Murshidabad until the British East India Company's victory at Plassey in 1757. Kolkata then became the capital of British India until 1911, and the heart of the Bengal Renaissance.

West Bengal's UNESCO cultural sites are the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (1999, part of the Mountain Railways of India) and Santiniketan (2023). Durga Puja in Kolkata was inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2021.

A short history

The Pala dynasty, from the 8th to the 12th centuries, patronised Buddhist monasteries such as Nalanda and Vikramashila. The Sena kings followed, then the Bengal Sultanate, whose ruined capitals of Gaur and Pandua lie in Malda district. The Nawabs of Bengal ruled from Murshidabad in the 18th century. After Plassey, the East India Company made Calcutta its base, and the city grew into the capital of British India. Bengal was partitioned in 1905 and again in 1947, which reshaped its towns and people.

Where to stay

Kolkata is the natural base, with heritage hotels in old mansions as well as modern options. Bishnupur, Santiniketan and Murshidabad each deserve a night; Darjeeling needs at least two. The Hooghly towns are easy day trips from Kolkata by train or road.

Lesser-known heritage

  • Gaur and Pandua in Malda: ruined mosques and gateways of the Bengal Sultanate.
  • Kalna's temples, including the 108 Shiva temples in two concentric circles.
  • Itachuna Rajbari and other zamindari mansions.
  • Plassey's memorial, the site of the 1757 battle.

Tips

  • Visit Kumartuli in the weeks before Durga Puja to see the idols being made.
  • Take a ferry across the Hooghly for views of the old ghats.
  • Book Darjeeling toy-train joy rides in advance.

When to go

  • October to March: the best season in the plains.
  • September or October: Durga Puja in Kolkata.
  • December: the Poush Mela in Santiniketan.
  • March to May and October to December: the best months for Darjeeling.

Safety

  • Timings, weekly closures and tickets change; check the ASI, state tourism or the site before you go.
  • Living temples, mosques and shrines set their own rules on dress, entry and photography; follow what is posted.

What to pack

  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Scarf or shawl for places of worship
  • Hat, sunscreen and water
  • Photo ID for tickets
