Road Trips from Mumbai and Pune: Ghats, Konkan and Weekend Drives

Mumbai and Pune sit on either side of the Sahyadri, with ghats, forts, hill stations and the Konkan coast all within a weekend's drive.

4 min read · Updated September 2026

Mumbai and Pune share most of their road trips. The Mumbai–Pune Expressway climbs the Bhor ghat past Lonavala and Khandala; south of Pune, NH48 leads to Satara, Mahabaleshwar and Kolhapur; the old Mumbai–Nashik highway climbs to Igatpuri and the wine country; and NH66 runs down the Konkan coast towards Goa. The Samruddhi Expressway to Nagpur has also made Shirdi and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad) quicker to reach.

The monsoon is the region's signature road-trip season, when the Sahyadri turn green and waterfalls pour off the cliffs, but weekend crowds and slippery ghats need care.

Quick answer

The best road trips from Mumbai and Pune are Lonavala and Khandala (about 85 km from Mumbai), Matheran, Alibaug, Mahabaleshwar and Panchgani (about 250 km from Mumbai, 120 km from Pune), Nashik and Igatpuri, Bhandardara, Malshej ghat, the Konkan coast to Dapoli, Ganpatipule and Tarkarli, and Goa (about 590 km). The monsoon (July to September) is greenest; October to February is best for the coast.

Key takeaways

  • The Mumbai–Pune Expressway is the gateway to Lonavala, Pune and the south.
  • Matheran is car-free; park at Dasturi and walk or ride in.
  • Monsoon weekends bring huge crowds and police restrictions at waterfalls and ghats.
  • The Konkan coast is best from October to February.
  • NH66 to Goa has ongoing works in Raigad; the Kolhapur route is an alternative.

Tips for driving out of Mumbai and Pune

  • Leave early; exits from Mumbai via Vashi and Panvel are slow after 8 am.
  • On the expressway, keep to lane discipline; heavy vehicles use the left lanes.
  • In the monsoon, avoid stopping at unofficial waterfall spots and follow local bans.
  • Parking at popular viewpoints fills quickly at weekends.

Planning a long weekend

With three days, pair a hill station with the coast or a heritage stop: Mahabaleshwar with Pratapgad and Wai, Nashik's vineyards with Trimbakeshwar and Igatpuri, or Alibaug with Murud and Kashid. With four or five days, drive down the Konkan to Ganpatipule and Ratnagiri, or head to Kolhapur and the Amboli ghat.

Food is part of the fun: vada pav and misal on the expressway food courts, Malvani seafood on the coast, and Kolhapuri thalis in the south.

Coming back

  • Sunday evening traffic at the Khalapur and Vashi toll plazas is heavy; return early.
  • In the monsoon, check expressway advisories for landslide or waterlogging diversions.

When to go

July to September is the greenest and most popular time for ghat drives, with fog, waterfalls and crowds. October to February is best for the coast, forts and Mahabaleshwar. March to May is hot, though hill stations and Bhandardara's firefly season (around May and June) draw visitors.

Safety

  • On ghat roads, use low gears downhill and avoid overtaking on bends, especially in fog.
  • Mountain roads close or slow down after heavy rain, snow or landslides; check road status and weather updates each morning and avoid driving after dark.
  • Permits, tolls, entry fees, pass openings and road works change; check official sources shortly before you travel.
  • Distances and driving times are approximate and vary with traffic, weather, road works and stops.

What to pack

  • Driving licence, RC, insurance and PUC certificate, with copies
  • Warm layers and a rain jacket
  • Motion-sickness tablets for winding roads
  • Cash for small towns and barriers
