Road Trips from Hyderabad: Heritage, Forests and Long Drives

From Hyderabad, road trips lead to Kakatiya temples, Deccan forts, Krishna river gorges and, further afield, Hampi and Goa.

4 min read · Updated September 2026

Hyderabad sits on the Deccan plateau, and its road trips reflect that landscape: rocky hills, reservoirs and forests, with dynastic capitals scattered across them. To the north-east lie Warangal and the UNESCO-listed Ramappa temple; to the south, the Nallamala forest and the Krishna gorge at Srisailam; to the west, Bidar's fort; and further south-west, Hampi and Gandikota.

Most roads are good highways, but forest roads through the Amrabad Tiger Reserve close at night.

Quick answer

The best road trips from Hyderabad are Ananthagiri Hills (about 80 km), Pochampally (about 50 km), Bidar (about 145 km), Warangal and Ramappa (about 150 to 210 km), Nagarjuna Sagar (about 160 km), Srisailam (about 215 km, through the Nallamala forest), Laknavaram (about 220 km), Bhadrachalam (about 310 km), Hampi (about 375 km) and Goa (about 650 km). October to February is best; the monsoon greens the forests.

Key takeaways

  • Warangal and Ramappa make an excellent heritage weekend.
  • The road to Srisailam crosses the Amrabad Tiger Reserve, which closes at night.
  • Ananthagiri Hills is the nearest green escape.
  • Hampi and Gandikota are long drives, best as three- to four-day trips.

Tips for driving out of Hyderabad

  • The Outer Ring Road makes it easy to exit the city in any direction; leave early.
  • Carry water and avoid midday walking at sites in summer.
  • Srisailam is busy with pilgrims on festival days, especially Maha Shivaratri.
  • Check whether the Papikondalu boat services are running before driving to Bhadrachalam.

Planning a long weekend

With three days, pair Warangal and Ramappa with Laknavaram lake, or Nagarjuna Sagar with Srisailam through the Nallamala forest. With four or five days, drive to Hampi via Raichur or Kurnool, returning via Gandikota and the Belum caves. On the road, stop for Hyderabadi biryani before you leave and try Warangal's local sweets.

When to go

October to February is best, with pleasant days on the Deccan. The monsoon (June to September) turns the forests green and fills the reservoirs, making Nagarjuna Sagar and Srisailam dramatic when the dam gates open. April to June is very hot.

Safety

  • Mountain roads close or slow down after heavy rain, snow or landslides; check road status and weather updates each morning and avoid driving after dark.
  • Permits, tolls, entry fees, pass openings and road works change; check official sources shortly before you travel.
  • Distances and driving times are approximate and vary with traffic, weather, road works and stops.

What to pack

  • Driving licence, RC, insurance and PUC certificate, with copies
  • Warm layers and a rain jacket
  • Motion-sickness tablets for winding roads
  • Cash for small towns and barriers
