Heritage Tourism in Telangana: Hyderabad, Golconda and Warangal

Telangana combines the Kakatiya temples of Warangal with the Qutb Shahi and Nizam heritage of Hyderabad, and a strong craft and food culture.

4 min read · Updated September 2026

Telangana's heritage has two great chapters. The Kakatiya dynasty ruled from Warangal between the 12th and 14th centuries and built the Ramappa and Thousand Pillar temples. The Qutb Shahis founded Hyderabad in the late 16th century, and the Asaf Jahi Nizams made it one of the richest princely states until 1948.

The Kakatiya Rudreshwara (Ramappa) Temple was inscribed by UNESCO in 2021. Hyderabad was named a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy in 2019.

Quick answer

Telangana's heritage highlights are the Ramappa temple (UNESCO 2021), Warangal Fort and the Thousand Pillar Temple, and Hyderabad's Golconda Fort, Qutb Shahi tombs, Charminar, Chowmahalla Palace and Salar Jung Museum. Add Pochampally's ikat weaving and Hyderabadi food. October to February is the best season; four to five days covers the main sites.

A short history

The Satavahanas and later the Kakatiyas ruled parts of the region; the Kakatiya capital at Warangal fell to the Delhi Sultanate in the early 14th century. The Bahmanis and then the Qutb Shahis held Golconda, which grew rich on the diamond trade. Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah founded Hyderabad in 1591. After the Mughal conquest of Golconda in 1687, the Asaf Jahi Nizams ruled Hyderabad State from 1724 until it joined India in 1948. Telangana became a separate state in 2014.

Where to stay and getting around

Hyderabad is the base for the city's monuments and a hub for flights and trains. Warangal is about three hours by road or a short train ride away, and Ramappa is about 70 km beyond Warangal. Pochampally is an easy half-day trip from Hyderabad.

Lesser-known heritage

  • The Paigah tombs in Hyderabad, with fine stucco and lattice work.
  • Bhongir fort on a single granite rock, on the road to Warangal.
  • The Kakatiya-era temples at Ghanpur, near Ramappa.
  • The Falaknuma Palace, now a hotel, visible from the old city.

Tips

  • Visit Golconda in the late afternoon and stay for the evening show.
  • Explore the old city early, before traffic builds.
  • Hire a guide at Ramappa to read the sculpture.
  • Dress modestly at mosques and temples.
