Bengaluru to Goa Road Trip: Routes via Hubballi and the Ghats

Bengaluru to Goa is a long but easy highway drive across the Deccan, finishing with a descent through the Western Ghats.

4 min read · Updated September 2026

Most drivers go from Bengaluru to Goa on NH48, the Mumbai highway, through Tumakuru, Chitradurga, Davanagere and Hubballi–Dharwad. From there, the choice is how to cross the Western Ghats: via Belagavi and the Chorla ghat into north Goa, via Ramnagar and the Anmod ghat towards Ponda and south Goa, or west to Karwar and along the coast. The Deccan stretch is fast and flat; the ghats are slower and forested.

With detours to Hampi, Dandeli or Gokarna, the drive becomes a satisfying three- to five-day trip.

Quick answer

Bengaluru to Goa is about 560 to 600 km and usually takes 10 to 11 hours via NH48 to Hubballi–Dharwad, then through the Western Ghats via Belagavi and Chorla, or via the Anmod ghat. Good detours include Chitradurga fort, Hampi, Dandeli and Gokarna via the coast. October to March is best; the ghat sections can be slow in the monsoon, and the Anmod route has seen repair closures.

Key takeaways

  • NH48 to Hubballi is a fast four- and six-lane highway.
  • Choose your ghat: Chorla via Belagavi, Anmod via Ramnagar, or the coast via Karwar.
  • Check the status of the Anmod ghat, which has had repair closures.
  • Hampi, Dandeli and Gokarna turn the drive into a multi-day trip.
  • Fuel and food are easy on NH48; ghat sections have fewer services.

Crossing the Western Ghats

The Chorla ghat links Belagavi with north Goa through forest and is popular in the monsoon for its mist and waterfalls. The Anmod ghat on NH748 has had periods of repair and restrictions on heavy vehicles; check its status before choosing it. The Karwar route adds the coast and is the natural choice if you want Gokarna.

Once you arrive

Driving considerations

  • Leave Bengaluru early to clear the city before Tumakuru.
  • NH48 carries heavy trucks; keep a safe distance and avoid tired late-night driving.
  • Ghat roads are narrow; give way to uphill traffic and avoid overtaking on bends.
  • Goa's roads are narrow and busy with scooters; drive slowly in villages.

Food along the way

Davanagere is famous for benne dosa, and Hubballi–Dharwad for Dharwad pedha. In Goa, fish thali, xacuti and bebinca await at the end of the drive.

When to go

October to March is best, with dry roads and pleasant Goa weather. The monsoon (June to September) makes the ghats beautiful but slippery, with occasional landslides and fog. Hampi is hot from April to June.

Safety

  • On ghat roads, use low gears downhill, give way to uphill traffic where the road is narrow, and do not overtake on blind bends.
  • Mountain roads close or slow down after heavy rain, snow or landslides; check road status and weather updates each morning and avoid driving after dark.
  • Permits, tolls, entry fees, pass openings and road works change; check official sources shortly before you travel.
  • Distances and driving times are approximate and vary with traffic, weather, road works and stops.

What to pack

  • Driving licence, RC, insurance and PUC certificate, with copies
  • Warm layers and a rain jacket
  • Motion-sickness tablets for winding roads
  • Cash for small towns and barriers
