Weekend Adventure Trips from Mumbai and Pune

The Sahyadris start just beyond Mumbai's suburbs and Pune sits right among them. Here are the best adventure weekends for both cities, with the right season for each.

4 min read · Updated September 2026

Mumbai and Pune share the same adventure playground: the forts, cliffs and plateaus of the Sahyadri range, the rivers that drop from them to the Konkan coast, and the coast itself. Most of the places below are two to four hours from either city, which makes day trips and one-night weekends easy.

Seasons matter more than distance here. The monsoon, from June to September, is peak time for treks and rafting at Kolad, while paragliding and beach water sports run in the dry months. We have merged Mumbai and Pune into one guide because the destinations are the same.

Quick answer

The best weekend adventure trips from Mumbai and Pune are Kundalika river rafting at Kolad (best in the monsoon), paragliding at Kamshet (mid-October to May), Sahyadri treks such as Rajmachi, Lohagad, Harishchandragad and Kalsubai, lakeside camping at Pawna and Bhandardara, the bungee jump at Della Adventure near Lonavala, and water sports at Alibaug or, on a long weekend, Tarkarli.

Key takeaways

  • Kolad is about three hours from both cities; its dam-fed rapids are best in the monsoon.
  • Kamshet is Maharashtra's paragliding centre, flying from about mid-October to late May.
  • Sahyadri fort treks are greenest from June to September and drier from October to February.
  • Pawna Lake and Bhandardara are easy overnight camping trips.
  • Local authorities close risky waterfalls and fort paths in heavy rain; follow their orders.

Rafting and water

Kundalika river rafting, Kolad

Rafting on the Kundalika depends on the morning water release from a hydroelectric project upstream, giving Grade II to III rapids that suit beginners. It is busiest and most exciting in the monsoon.

Weekend tips

  • For monsoon treks, leave early and avoid the most crowded weekends in July and August.
  • Local trains from Mumbai reach Lonavala, Malavli and Karjat, useful for day treks.
  • Book Kolad rafting and Kamshet flights ahead on weekends.
  • Check district orders; some forts, waterfalls and dams are closed in heavy rain.

Safety

  • Avoid cliff edges, waterfalls and swollen streams in the monsoon; accidents happen every year.
  • Raft only with operators who give a safety briefing, life jackets and helmets.
  • Fly with registered paragliding schools and accept weather cancellations.
  • Carry a torch; monsoon treks get dark early under cloud.
  • Do not trek alone on less-used Sahyadri routes.
