Alibaug, in Raigad district, lies on the Konkan coast just south of Mumbai, reached by ferry across the harbour or by road. It was a stronghold of the Maratha navy under Kanhoji Angre in the 18th century, and several sea forts guard its coast. Today it is a favourite weekend retreat, with villas, beach resorts and fishing villages.
The things to do in Alibaug include walking to Kolaba Fort in the sea at low tide, beach days at Nagaon, Kihim, Varsoli and Kashid, a boat to the unconquered island fortress of Murud-Janjira, the Portuguese fort at Korlai, temples and Konkani seafood.
One or two days is typical. October to March is the best time; the monsoon brings rough seas and ferry suspensions.
For how to get there, when to go and where to stay, see our Alibaug travel guide.

Sea forts
Walk to Kolaba Fort

Kolaba Fort, about a kilometre off Alibaug beach, was fortified by Shivaji and later became a base of the Maratha admiral Kanhoji Angre. At low tide you can walk to it across the sand; at high tide, horse carts or boats take visitors. It has temples and a sweet-water well inside. Check tide times and return before the tide turns.
Inside the walls are a Siddhivinayak temple, shrines and a freshwater well that has never run dry, remarkable for a fort surrounded by the sea. The fort is also a good vantage point for sunset over Alibaug beach.

Take a boat to Murud-Janjira
Murud-Janjira, about 55 km south, is an island fortress built by the Siddis in the 17th century, famously never captured despite attacks by the Portuguese, British and Marathas. Sailboats from Rajpuri jetty take visitors across; its walls, cannons and water tanks are impressive.
The fort once had a palace, mosques, water tanks and dozens of bastions with cannons, including a huge one called Kalal Bangadi. Guides at the jetty explain its long history of resisting sieges.
