Kolhapur, on the Panchganga river in southern Maharashtra, was the capital of a Maratha princely state founded by Tarabai in the early 18th century. Its ruler Shahu Maharaj (1874–1922) was a pioneering social reformer, and the city has a strong tradition of wrestling, music and cinema.
The things to do in Kolhapur include darshan at the ancient Mahalaxmi Temple, the New Palace and its royal museum, evenings at Rankala Lake, a drive up to Panhala Fort and the Jyotiba Temple, and shopping for Kolhapuri chappals and traditional jewellery. The food, especially the red and white mutton curries, is famous and fiery.
One or two days is enough. October to February is the most comfortable time.
