Paragliding in India: Best Sites, Seasons and What to Expect

From the long flights over the Kangra valley at Bir Billing to short hops over lakes and tea gardens, India has paragliding for first-timers and cross-country pilots. Here is where and when to fly.

6 min read · Updated September 2026

Paragliding is one of the easiest ways to try an air sport in India. On a tandem flight you are strapped in front of a trained pilot who does the flying; your job is to run a few steps at take-off and sit back. No experience is needed, and flights last anywhere from five minutes to half an hour or more depending on the site and the air.

India's best-known site is Bir Billing in Himachal Pradesh, which hosted the Paragliding World Cup in 2015 and draws solo pilots from around the world each autumn. Kamshet near Pune is the main training centre in western India, and there are smaller sites in Manali, Kalimpong, Gangtok, Vagamon, Naukuchiatal, Sanasar and Goa. This guide covers where to fly, when, and how to do it safely.

Quick answer

The best places for paragliding in India are Bir Billing in Himachal Pradesh, Solang Valley near Manali, Kamshet near Pune, Kalimpong and Gangtok in the eastern Himalaya, Vagamon in Kerala and Naukuchiatal in Uttarakhand. Most sites fly from October to May. Himachal's sites, including Bir Billing, close each monsoon from mid-July to mid-September. First-timers take tandem flights with a registered pilot.

Key takeaways

  • Bir Billing is India's top paragliding site, with launches at Billing and landings at Bir far below.
  • Himachal suspends paragliding every monsoon, from 15 July to 15 September, on district orders.
  • Kamshet near Pune flies from about mid-October to late May and is the main place to learn in western India.
  • Tandem flights need no experience; solo flying needs a proper course over several days.
  • Choose registered pilots and operators, and check harnesses, reserve parachutes and helmets.

Paragliding depends on the day's wind, thermals and cloud. Even in season, flights are delayed or cancelled when conditions are wrong; build a spare day into your plans at Bir Billing or Kamshet.

What a tandem flight involves

  • You are weighed and asked about health, then fitted with a harness and helmet.
  • The pilot explains the take-off: you run forward with the pilot behind you until the wing lifts you off the ground. Keep running until told to sit.
  • In the air, you sit in the harness in front of the pilot. On longer flights the pilot may let you hold the brakes briefly.
  • For landing, you lift your legs or stand and run on the pilot's command.
  • Many operators offer a GoPro video for an extra charge. Keep phones zipped away unless the pilot allows them.

Learning to fly solo

If you want to fly yourself, look for a school that runs structured courses to international standards. A basic course usually takes around a week or more, starting with ground handling on small slopes before solo flights under radio guidance. Kamshet and Bir Billing are the main training centres.

Ask the school about its instructors' certifications, the equipment you will use and the ratio of students to instructors. Solo pilots should also have insurance that covers paragliding.

Rules and regulation

Paragliding operators and pilots in Himachal Pradesh must be registered with the state, and the district administration enforces the annual monsoon ban. Other states have their own rules. In practice, the simplest check is to fly with an established operator that can show its registration and its pilots' licences, and to avoid people selling flights on the roadside.

Safety

  • Fly only with a registered operator and a licensed tandem pilot.
  • Check the harness has a reserve parachute and that you have a helmet that fits.
  • Tell the pilot about any back, knee or heart problems; take-off and landing involve running.
  • Wear closed shoes with ankle support, not sandals.
  • Accept cancellations for weather without argument; wind and cloud change fast in the mountains.
  • Do not fly during the monsoon ban or in unsettled weather, whatever an operator offers.

What to pack

  • Closed trekking or sports shoes
  • A windproof jacket; it is colder in the air
  • Sunglasses with a strap and sunscreen
  • A small bag you can zip shut, or leave everything with the operator
