Things to Do in Bir Billing: Paragliding, Monasteries & Tea Gardens

A Tibetan settlement and tea-growing village below one of the world's best paragliding take-off sites, in the Kangra valley.

5 min read · Bir Billing, Himachal Pradesh, India

Bir is a village of about 1,400 metres in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, and Billing is a meadow roughly 14 km uphill at about 2,400 metres. Billing is the take-off point and Bir the landing site for paragliding flights that ride thermals along the Dhauladhar. The site hosted the Paragliding World Cup in 2015 and is considered one of the best in Asia.

Bir is also a Tibetan settlement, with several monasteries, a stupa, craft workshops and a café culture that draws long-stay travellers. Tea gardens slope down towards the valley, and the old temples of Baijnath are a short drive away.

One day is enough for a tandem flight; two or three days let you slow down and add a monastery walk, a village visit or a trek. Flying depends on the weather, so leave a buffer day if paragliding is the main goal.

For how to get there, when to go and where to stay, see our Bir Billing travel guide.

Take a tandem flight from Billing

Tandem flights take off from Billing and last anywhere from about 15 to 30 minutes or more, depending on the package and the wind. You fly with a trained pilot over forests, villages and tea gardens with the Dhauladhar behind you, and land in the open field at Bir. No experience is needed.

Choose a registered operator with certified pilots, ask about insurance and equipment, and do not push a pilot to fly in poor conditions. Flights stop during the monsoon, usually from July to mid-September, and may be paused on windy or cloudy days.
