Things to Do in Manali: Snow, Adventure, Old Temples & Café Lanes

A Beas valley town at the head of the Kullu valley, part adventure base, part old Himachali village, and the gateway to Lahaul, Spiti and Ladakh.

6 min read · Manali, Himachal Pradesh, India

Manali sits at about 2,050 metres at the northern end of the Kullu valley in Himachal Pradesh, on the banks of the Beas. It is one of India's most visited hill destinations, and it serves many different trips at once: honeymoons, family snow holidays, college groups, trekking and road trips to Lahaul, Spiti and Ladakh.

The things to do in Manali fall into a few clear groups. In town, there are the 16th-century Hadimba Devi Temple, the cafés and lanes of Old Manali and the hot springs at Vashisht. Up the valley, Solang has paragliding in summer and skiing in winter, and the Atal Tunnel and Rohtang Pass lead to high-altitude snow. Down the valley are Naggar's castle and art gallery, river rafting and apple orchards.

Five days is a good length for a first trip. Weekends, May to June and the Christmas to New Year period are very crowded, and traffic up to Solang and Rohtang can be slow.

For how to get there, when to go and where to stay, see our Manali travel guide.

Must-see in Manali

Visit Hadimba Devi Temple

Wooden pagoda-roofed Hadimba Devi Temple in the Dhungri cedar forest, Manali
Hadimba Devi Temple

Hadimba Devi Temple, built in 1553 under Raja Bahadur Singh, stands in the Dhungri deodar forest above town. Its four-tiered wooden roof and carved doorway are fine examples of Himachali temple architecture, and it is dedicated to Hidimba, wife of Bhima in the Mahabharata.

Go early in the morning to see it before the crowds and yak-photo stalls get busy. The Dhungri Van Vihar forest around it is pleasant for a short walk, and the Ghatotkach shrine nearby honours Hidimba's son.

Go to Solang Valley

Solang Valley, about 14 km from Manali, is the adventure hub of the area. In summer it offers paragliding, zorbing, ATV rides and a ropeway up the slope towards Mount Phatru. In winter it becomes a snow playground, with ski schools and snow activities on the slopes.

Prices and quality vary a lot between operators; agree on duration and price before you start, and use registered operators for paragliding.

Drive through the Atal Tunnel to Sissu

The Atal Tunnel, opened in 2020 and about 9 km long, runs under the Rohtang range and brings Lahaul within about an hour of Manali. On the north side, Sissu has a waterfall, a small lake and wide views of a much starker, drier valley. In winter, the Lahaul side is often under deep snow.

Access can be restricted after heavy snowfall, and self-drive rules change with conditions; check with local authorities before setting off.

Visit Rohtang Pass

Rohtang Pass

Rohtang Pass, at about 3,980 metres, is the classic snow trip from Manali. It is usually open from around May to October or November, depending on snow. A permit is required for vehicles, and daily numbers are capped, so book through the official system in advance and start early.

See Naggar Castle and the Roerich Art Gallery

Naggar, about 20 km down the valley, was the old capital of the Kullu kingdom. Its castle, built in stone and timber, is now a heritage hotel with a small museum and a temple courtyard. Nearby, the Roerich Estate was the home of the Russian painter Nicholas Roerich; the gallery shows his Himalayan paintings.

Time needed
3 hours return
Good for
Walkers, families with older children

Pick apples and see the orchards

Stay in Sethan or a village above town

Villages such as Sethan, Goshal and Prini offer quieter stays. In winter, Sethan is known for snow camps and igloo stays set up by local operators.
