Shimla, at about 2,200 metres, is the capital of Himachal Pradesh and was the summer capital of British India from 1864. The Raj left behind a remarkable set of buildings: Christ Church on the Ridge, the Viceregal Lodge on Observatory Hill, the Gaiety Theatre, and the narrow-gauge railway from Kalka, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Most things to do in Shimla are within walking distance of the Ridge and Mall Road, which are closed to general traffic. Beyond town, the forests and orchards of Kufri, Mashobra, Naldehra and Chail make easy day trips, and in winter the surrounding hills often get snow.
Two days covers the town and Kufri; add a day for the toy train or a quieter stay outside town. Shimla is very busy on weekends and holidays.
For how to get there, when to go and where to stay, see our Shimla travel guide.

Heritage and temples
Climb up to Jakhoo Temple

Jakhoo Temple, on Shimla's highest hill, is dedicated to Hanuman and marked by a very tall statue of the god that is visible from across town. You can walk up a steep path from the Ridge (about 30 to 45 minutes), take a taxi or use the ropeway. The monkeys here are notorious for snatching glasses and phones, so keep them in your bag.

Tour the Viceregal Lodge
The Viceregal Lodge on Observatory Hill, completed in 1888, was the summer residence of the Viceroys. It is a grand Scottish baronial-style building where key discussions before Partition took place. Go to Kufri

Kufri, about 15 km from Shimla, is the most popular day trip, with pony rides to Mahasu Peak, an amusement park and the Himalayan Nature Park. In winter it is often the easiest place near Shimla to see snow. It can be crowded and commercial, so agree on pony prices in advance.

Mashobra, about 12 km away, is a quieter area of apple orchards and forest with a few upscale stays. Naldehra, further on, has a golf course on a meadow ringed by deodars, said to have been laid out at the wish of Lord Curzon.
Visit Chail
Chail, about 45 km from Shimla, was the summer retreat of the Maharaja of Patiala. The Chail Palace is now a heritage hotel, and the town is known for a cricket ground often described as one of the highest in the world, in a cantonment area.

Walk the Glen and Summer Hill
The Glen, a forested valley below Shimla, and Summer Hill, a quiet suburb with the Himachal Pradesh University, offer shady walks away from the crowds. Chadwick Falls, near Summer Hill, flows best after the monsoon.

Food and seasons
Eat your way along the Mall
Shimla's old cafés and restaurants on the Mall have served generations of visitors; the Indian Coffee House, run by a workers' cooperative, is a classic stop for coffee and dosa. Try Himachali dishes such as sidu, madra (chickpeas in yoghurt) and babru where available, and the local dham, a festive meal served on leaf plates.
- Good for

Apple season in the hills
From July to October, the orchards of Kotgarh, Thanedar and Narkanda, beyond Shimla, are harvested. The apple industry here was shaped by Samuel Evans Stokes, an American who introduced new varieties in the early 20th century. A drive to Narkanda and Thanedar makes a lovely day trip in the season.
