The drive from Delhi to Shimla is one of the most familiar in North India: NH44 north to Ambala and the Chandigarh area, then NH5 up from Parwanoo through Dharampur and Solan to Shimla. Much of the hill section has been widened to four lanes, which has cut the time on the climb, though bottlenecks remain near towns.
It makes a good weekend drive, and it is also the first leg of longer trips to Kinnaur, Spiti and Manali. Our Shimla guide covers what to see once you are there.
Quick answer
Delhi to Shimla is about 350 km by road via Panipat, Ambala, Chandigarh (Zirakpur), Parwanoo and Solan, and usually takes 7 to 9 hours. It is easily done in a day. Stops along the way
Pinjore Gardens
Terraced Mughal-style gardens just before the hills.
Barog and Solan
Small towns on the climb; Barog is known for its railway tunnel on the toy-train line.
Chail
A detour from Kandaghat to an old palace town on a ridge.
The toy train alternative
The Kalka–Shimla Railway, part of the Mountain Railways of India UNESCO World Heritage Site, climbs the same hills more slowly through more than a hundred tunnels. Some travellers drive to Kalka and take the train up, which needs advance booking.

Once you arrive
Driving considerations
- Start from Delhi before 6 am to clear the NH44 traffic and reach the hills by early afternoon.
- Himachal collects an entry toll from out-of-state vehicles at Parwanoo; keep the receipt.
- Parking in central Shimla is limited and much of the Mall is closed to private cars; use hotel parking or the public parking lots.
- In winter, carry snow chains or check with your hotel before driving above Shimla to Kufri or Narkanda.
Food and fuel
Fuel is easy to find all the way to Shimla. The dhabas at Murthal and the food courts near Karnal and Ambala are the usual breakfast stops on NH44, and there are plenty of cafés at Dharampur and Solan once you start climbing.
When to go
March to June is busy and pleasant; October and November are clear and quieter. Snow is likely in and around Shimla, Kufri and Narkanda in January and February, but it is never guaranteed, and snowfall can close roads for hours. The monsoon brings slips and fog on the hill section.
Safety
- Mountain roads close or slow down after heavy rain, snow or landslides; check road status and weather updates each morning and avoid driving after dark.
- Permits, tolls, entry fees, pass openings and road works change; check official sources shortly before you travel.
- Distances and driving times are approximate and vary with traffic, weather, road works and stops.
What to pack
- Driving licence, RC, insurance and PUC certificate, with copies
- Warm layers and a rain jacket
- Motion-sickness tablets for winding roads
- Cash for small towns and barriers
