Chandigarh was built in the 1950s as the new capital of Punjab after Partition, and it now serves as the capital of both Punjab and Haryana. The Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier drew its master plan, dividing the city into numbered sectors with markets, schools and green belts, and designed the Capitol Complex, now part of a UNESCO World Heritage listing of his work.
The best things to do in Chandigarh include Nek Chand's Rock Garden, a walk along Sukhna Lake, a tour of the Capitol Complex, the city's many gardens and its museums on art and architecture. Its roads and cycle tracks make it one of the easiest Indian cities to get around.
Two days covers the city; add a day for Pinjore Gardens, Morni Hills or Kasauli. October to March is the best season; summers get very hot.

Explore the Rock Garden

The Rock Garden was created by Nek Chand, a road inspector who began building it in secret in the late 1950s on government land, using stones, broken ceramics, bangles and other waste. By the time it was discovered, it covered several acres. Today it spreads over about 40 acres of courtyards, waterfalls and thousands of sculptures of people and animals.
The winding paths and low doorways make it fun for children. Allow time; it is bigger than it looks.
