Kasauli is a small hill town at about 1,800 metres in Solan district, Himachal Pradesh, about 65 km from Chandigarh. It was established as a cantonment in the 1840s and much of it is still under army control, which is why its lanes remain green and uncluttered.
There are no big attractions here, and that is the point. The things to do in Kasauli are walking along the Mall and the forest trails, visiting old churches and schools, watching the sun set over the plains, and making short trips to nearby Sanawar, Dagshai and the Timber Trail ropeway. Writer Khushwant Singh spent many summers here, and the town hosts an annual literature festival in his name.
One to two days is enough. Weekends bring visitors from Chandigarh and Delhi; weekdays are very quiet.
For how to get there, when to go and where to stay, see our Kasauli travel guide.
