Dharamshala, in Kangra district, is really several towns stacked on a hillside. Lower Dharamshala is the administrative town. About 10 km up, McLeod Ganj at around 2,000 metres is the home of the 14th Dalai Lama and the Central Tibetan Administration, and it is where most travellers stay. Above it, Bhagsu and Dharamkot lead to the trails of the Dhauladhar range.
The things to do here combine Tibetan Buddhist culture and mountain walks. You can visit the Dalai Lama's temple, learn about Tibet's recent history at the Tibet Museum, eat momos and thukpa, take a meditation class, walk to Bhagsu Falls and trek to Triund for a view straight at the snow peaks.
Two days covers McLeod Ganj and the main sights; add a day for Triund and one more for Norbulingka and the Kangra valley.
For how to get there, when to go and where to stay, see our Dharamshala travel guide.

It can be done as a long day hike or with an overnight camp.
Forest department rules on camping and registration have changed over the years; check the current process and carry your waste back down. The last stretch is steep and rocky.

See the Norbulingka Institute
Norbulingka, near Sidhbari about 10 km below Dharamshala, is an institute dedicated to preserving Tibetan arts. Its Japanese-inspired gardens and workshops let you watch thangka painters, woodcarvers and metalworkers at work, and the shop sells their crafts.

See the HPCA Stadium
The Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in lower Dharamshala has the snow-capped Dhauladhar as its backdrop and is often called one of the most scenic cricket grounds in the world. It hosts international and IPL matches, and visitors can sometimes see the ground on non-match days.
