Spiritual Tourism in Himachal Pradesh: Shakti Temples and Tibetan Monasteries

Himachal's hills hold a circuit of revered Devi temples, historic gurdwaras and the Tibetan Buddhist heartland of Dharamshala and Spiti.

4 min read · Updated September 2026

Himachal Pradesh is often called Dev Bhoomi too, with temples in nearly every village. Pilgrims from north India visit a circuit of Devi temples in the lower hills: Jwalamukhi, where natural flames are worshipped, Chintpurni, Naina Devi, Brajeshwari in Kangra and Chamunda near Palampur.

Higher up are old stone temples such as Baijnath and Bhimakali, the gurdwaras of Manikaran Sahib and Paonta Sahib, and the Tibetan Buddhist centres of McLeod Ganj, home of the Dalai Lama's temple complex, and the monasteries of Spiti.

Quick answer

Himachal Pradesh's main spiritual destinations are the Devi temples of Jwalamukhi, Chintpurni, Naina Devi, Brajeshwari and Chamunda, the Baijnath and Bhimakali temples, Manikaran Sahib and Paonta Sahib gurdwaras, Rewalsar, and the Buddhist centres of McLeod Ganj (Tsuglagkhang) and Spiti (Key and Tabo). The Devi temples can be visited most of the year; Spiti is best from June to October.
